Did you know?

Long before there were paintings hanging in galleries or bronze monuments standing in city squares, there was clay. Pressed between human fingers, shaped by thumbs, coiled, pinched, carved, and finally transformed by fire, clay has long been one of the world’s most emotional and expressive art forms.

What makes clay remarkable is that it begins as earth. It is dug from the ground, mixed with water, and shaped by hands. Unlike stone or metal, clay responds immediately to touch. Every movement leaves a trace. A fingerprint, a pinch, the pressure of a palm—these become part of the finished work, preserved forever.

The oldest known ceramic artifact dates from 28,000 years ago. Ancient hunter-gatherers were the first to make and fire bowls. Through the centuries techniques were refined, cultural styles emerged and ceramics as an art form blossomed. Whether it is for functional pottery or sculpture, clay is the perfect medium for many 3-dimensonal artists.
